"Plus it's been 2 and 1/2 years and we are only about 20% done with restoration. Every year there are less and less volunteers, every year funding runs drier. I know I said this in an earlier post, but really just think for a moment all you could accomplish by coming down and volunteering for a week, or donating to the red cross, or buying a home depot gift card for a home owner down here. YOU could really make a difference in someone's life. " -juliawelch.blogspot.com
***The first week of work has almost passed already! Time flies by! I wake up and have breakfast at 6 a.m. everyday, are ready in the van by 7:15 and start working by 8. Our construction/site managers Johnny and Keith are awesome. Keith was the founder of Hope has a Face. We have mostly worked with Johnny so far by drywalling, sanding, and painting the inside of the house. Tomorrow all we have left to do is put the final paint touches on the house and begin the flooring. For our first house project Water 4 (us) and Sun 7 have been split up, so I have been working with the Sun 7 team leader, Caitlin, and five of her teammates as well as five of my own teammates. The days are long and tiring, but I feel really accomplished by the end of the day, especially at the rate we are going...and I'm not even working with my full permanent team! We don't have a radio yet, so a lot of times we just find ourselves singing out loud and just cracking weird jokes to keep us going and not think about how many times we had to re-sand or re-dry-wall the wall.
:) On another note, last night our team went out to a BBQ restaurant about 10 minutes from where we reside (The Shed) and I will tell you, I had the BEST RIBS EVER! They were so delicious, fell right off the bone..we sat outside and apparently they have a band come play on the weekend. Even without the band, the music was great.....played some blues! I have a priceless pic of our TL Ben with sauce all over his face. Not only was the food amazing, but we were able to meet up with three of our other teams from our unit...so it was a nice change up and really good to see people that we haven't in....not even a week and 1/2. This Saturday was plan on seeing them as well because all of the Gulf Coast Americorps teams are heading to Baton Rouge for a Symposium, which basically is bringing Americorps members to further develop our life as a corps member and to explore avenues pertaining to post-corps life. We are able to sign up for two different classes....a personal development for us all.
Next weekend is our spring break, so I have a long weekend and can hopefully meet up with other members and possibly spend the weekend in New Orleans!
Love and miss you all and DO PLEASE feel like commenting and updating me on all your lives! I do want to know what's going on with you all too!
